Tale of the Wimpy Dogs

If you come a knockin' at the door at our house, our dogs will bark.  And bark.  And bark.  Buddy has that little dog yappy bark, and he doesn't tend to stop when you come into our house, unless he knows you well.  Buddy is one of those annoying, barking little dogs when "new" people enter his territory.   (And we love him anyway!)

Chester has a deep, rather bellowing bark.  If I were knocking on someone's door and heard Chester barking, I'd wonder if that was the sound of a big, un-friendly dog!  I'm convinced that Chester barks because Buddy barks when someone is at the door.  That's ok, though.  I like having a dog with that deep, somewhat intimidating bark.  He's such a sweet, mellow dog that the bark is by far the worst part of him, but I still like the bark when someone is at the door.

The point of all of that is that no one would come into this house without our dogs letting us know that they were here.  I like that.  Nothing beats our doggie alarm system for our house!

The other morning, too early to venture out into the cold of the Iowa never ending winter of 2013,  I leashed up the dogs, put on my winter outer wear, and went out on the front porch.  Buddy on one leash.  Chester on one leash.  Me standing at the top of the stairs, on the porch, as the dogs did their early morning business.

Something caught my eye.  I looked to my left.  There, on the porch, looking at me, quite calmly, were two cats.  Not my two cats.  Two cats who were curled up in balls, looking quite comfortable to be lounging on our front porch.  And those cats were not in the least bit worried that one person and two dogs had just come outside.  The looked at me, and ignored the dogs.  Consider that......... two cats, who are not our cats, on our front porch, and they IGNORED our dogs.  Ignored them.  Could have cared less that two dogs had just come out of the house where they were free-loading on the porch.  They looked at me a bit warily, but they ignored the dogs.

I looked from the cats to my dogs.  I was thinking that once my dogs saw the cats, the barking and straining at leashes would begin.  I was also thinking that my dogs sure weren't "with it" that early in the morning if they didn't even smell the strange cats on the porch or notice them in any way.  I stood there, looking from dogs to cats, waiting for something to happen.

One of the cats began to stretch.  Chester looked around.  Chester saw the cats.  Chester went right back to sniffing the grass in the front yard.  The smug looks on the cats faces increased 100%!!!  Sigh.

Early day dog business finished.  Cats still on the porch. The dogs and I head back inside. (Buddy never did notice the cats.  Chester continued to ignored them right back.)  The cats stayed on the porch.  Good grief.

A couple of lessons learned.

1.   The word is obviously out in the feral cat world.  My dogs are cat friendly wimps.

2.   You cannot enter our house without the dogs making enough racket to wake the neighbors, but if you want to lounge on our front porch, they don't have an issue with it.

That is the story of my wimpy dogs.  You may now return to complaining about the Never Ending Winter of 2013.  : )

Lamentations 3:55-58 I called upon thy name, O LORD, out of the low dungeon. Thou hast heard my voice: hide not thine ear at my breathing, at my cry. Thou drewest near in the day that I called upon thee: thou saidst, Fear not. O Lord, thou hast pleaded the causes of my soul; thou hast redeemed my life.

Isaiah 49:13-16a Sing, O heavens; and be joyful, O earth; and break forth into singing, O mountains: for the LORD hath comforted his people, and will have mercy upon his afflicted. But Zion said, The LORD hath forsaken me, and my Lord hath forgotten me. Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee. 5. What comfort we can take from eyewitness testimony!
1 John 1:1-4 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;) That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.

Psalms 40:1-4a I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD. Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust...

(11) Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me, O LORD: let thy lovingkindness and thy truth continually preserve me. (13) Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me: O LORD, make haste to help me.

1 Corinthians 15:54-57 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. Hebrews 4:14-16 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

2 Corinthians 1:3-5 Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ.

Psalms 42:1-5 As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God? My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God? When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday. Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.

  24. The passage today is a little different. Life itself is a battle and the way the Lord gets His children through battles doesn't change. Deuteronomy 20:1-4: When thou goest out to battle against thine enemies, and seest horses, and chariots, and a people more than thou, be not afraid of them: for the LORD thy God is with thee, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. And it shall be, when ye are come nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people, And shall say unto them, Hear, O Israel, ye approach this day unto battle against your enemies: let not your hearts faint, fear not, and do not tremble, neither be ye terrified because of them; For the LORD your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.
