Ok, now you are probably going to think that I'm strange with this post. I have no explaination, no reason, but one of my favorite places here is the huge Oakland cemetary, which is incorporated with a National Cemetary. Way back in the Civil War, there was a medical college here, which led to injured soldiers being here during the war. Which led to the need for a cemetary for soldiers. Hence, the National Cemetary here. As awesome as the National part of the cemetary is, with it's row after row after row of white marble headstones, its the older, more unique part of the cemetary that draws me.

There are several areas of the cemetary. Most of this cemetary is old, very old. It's a history all in itself. It's peaceful and serene and I feel very comfortable in this place.

I don't know the actual size of this cemetary, but it's huge. It covers rolling hills, small valleys, has twisting roads and stately, ancient trees.

There is something unique at most every turn here. As many times as I've been here, or driven through, I've never once felt sad. Just peaceful.

You probably can't read it, but the top of this says "Oakland Cemetary 1842".

The military portion of the cemetary, the National Cemetary, is surrounded by that tall, wrought iron fence.

So, there is your tour of Keokuk for today. It's a gorgeous, sunny day outside. I took a little tour through one of my favorite places. As strange as it is, I hope you enjoyed it also!

  1. Very interesting!
    Always here praying!
2 Corinthians 1:3-5 Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ.

  2. I love taking photos of this cemetery too. I was thinking about taking some last week when the leaves were so pretty.
